Thwart is a niche sideboard-style blue block card for decks that want 3 blue pitch and regularly defend—especially Guardians, Brutes, or slower midrange/control lists—but it is only worthwhile if your local metagame contains decks that reliably put multiple +1POWER counters on their attacks, since otherwise it is effectively just an inefficient 2-block. In most competitive decks, stronger generic defensive options such as Sink Below, Fate Foreseen, or Oasis Respite are better because they block more, provide card filtering or prevention, and are useful in nearly every matchup; Thwart should generally not see main-deck play, though it can be a reasonable metagame inclusion if counter-stacking attacks are common and removing those counters meaningfully changes combat math.
