Welcome to the Arena... Again

Welcome to the arena, player! Last time we visited the Deathmatch Arena, we saw fearless Warriors, Guardians ready to put their lives on the line, and wrathful Brutes. Now, it's time for round 2, so get your popcorn and tickets, and let's go to the Super Slamlink outside website!

What is Super Slam?

Super Slam is the last 2025 Flesh and Blood draftable set (this means you can play sealed formats with it). It will bring us two new talents, Revered and Reviled, as well as support for Brutes and Guardians.

It might seem similar to Heavy Hitterslink outside website, but it actually includes many new features for heroes and talents. Let's see what this set has in store for us.

Mechanics

First, let's look at all the mechanics in this set so we can understand how we should build each hero.

The Crowd Cheers (or Boos) You

"The Crowd Cheers or Boos You" is a new mechanic that mostly appears in talents. By itself, it doesn't really mean anything, but if you get cheered or booed, some cards may give you bonuses. Besides the actual heroes in this set, Cheap Shot and Will of the Crowd, for instance, interact with this mechanic.

Clash

This set will bring back Clash but also expand it to Brutes and the Revered talent (so far, this mechanic only appeared in Guardians). When Clash activates, both players must reveal the top card in their decks. Whoever reveals the most powerful Attack Action "wins" the Clash and gains a bonus. Vigorous Smashup (1), for instance, gives you a Vigor token when you win Clash.

Intimidate

Loading icon

Intimidate shows up mostly alongside the Reviled talent. It forces the opponent to banish random cards from their hand face-down, but, at the beginning of the end phase, those cards come back into their hand. This mechanic is often tied to Attacks like Instill Fear (1), but it also shows up in cards like Leave Them Hanging.

Suspense

Loading icon

Suspense mostly shows up in Guardian auras. This mechanic makes auras enter play with two Suspense counters. At the beginning of their controller's turn, they'll remove a counter from the aura. If there are no more counters on the aura when they do this, it breaks (so it's quite similar to Mechanologist Crank items). Some Auras are better if you remove them from play as soon as possible, like Act of Glory (1), but some are better if they stay on the board, like The Suspense is Killing Me.

Crush and Tower

Crush and Tower are quite common in Flesh and Blood. Now, they have returned in Guardians. Whereas Crush activates when your Attack deals 4 damage or more, Tower activates when an Attack has at least 13 power.

Talents

Like every set that brings us talents, Super Slam tied its new talents to its new heroes pretty closely. There are two new talents, in fact: Revered and Reviled.

Revered Heroes

Loading icon

Revered heroes are the "good guys" in Super Slam. All Revered cards center around justice, sportsmanship, and coming back into the game if you're behind.

Loading icon

Revered heroes are also great at playing defense with Toughness tokens, above-average Attacks like Comeback Kid (1), and by destroying tokens their counterparts create.

Tuffnut is the first Classic Constructed hero that only has 3 Intellect. At first, this may seem bad, but he can also pitch a card from the top of your deck (creating a resource "for free") and easily create Toughness tokens. We had never seen a defensive Brute hero like this before.

The idea behind him is simple: use his ability to pitch cards that have 6 power and defend yourself pretty well on your opponent's turn. So, when you build a deck around him, look for blue and yellow cards that have 6 power so you can always activate his ability and have resources.

Here's a tip: Rok will be a great weapon for him in Classic Constructed.

Everything Pleiades wants to do is get the most out of Suspense auras. Thanks to her ability, we can remove auras we don't want in play (like Edge of Their Seats (1)) and keep other auras in play for longer, like What Happens Next?, all at the same time. Then, we will be able to get a lot from several above-average Guardian Attacks.

Pleiades was the only hero in this set that got an Armory Deck all of her own. So, she got extra support, and her game plan is pretty clear from the precon list. However, we won't discuss this hero today. Keep an eye out for our next articles if you're interested in her!

Reviled Heros

Reviled heroes are the "bad guys" in Super Slam. They don't play fair, lean on dirty tricks, and are better if they get a head start.

Loading icon

This talent isn't that great at playing defense, but it can disrupt the opponent's defense with Intimidate. They also have a few "dirty tricks" up their sleeve, like small Instants and Attacks that will certainly grow considerably down the line.

Super Slam also brought back Kayo, this time as one of the bad guys. He still only has one Weapon zone (which is irrelevant for sealed formats because this set doesn't have any weapons) and interacts with cards that have 6 power, but this time he makes your Attacks have 6 power. This means your weakest blue card will have 6 power, so you can definitely get a lot from Offensive Behavior and Flex Speed (3), for instance.

Tuffnut will be the first Classic Constructed hero to have 3 Intellect. Lyath, in turn, will be the first Classic Constructed hero to have 5 Intellect. This might seem scary, but everything comes at a cost: all cards you play in his deck will have half their power and defense, rounded up.

To go around this, you should use buffs like Might tokens or Suspense auras. Lyath is the first Guardian that strongly encourages you to be aggressive with cheap cards and smaller Attacks. This way, his ability won't be so terrible.

The Expansion Slot

By far, the best thing about this set is the expansion slot. It includes a total of 31 cards, that is, new cards and incredibly relevant reprints. Let's take a look at all of them and see why they're the best part of Super Slam.

Reprints

For the first time, the new set will bring us a generous number of reprints, that is, cards that were truly difficult to find in stores, as well as expensive.

Loading icon

Regarding Equipment cards, for instance, Flick Knives had become astronomically expensive and disappeared from the market after The Huntedlink outside website came out. Considering it is a must for Cindra and Araknis, this reprint definitely came at the right time. Meanwhile, New Horizon has been expensive for some time, particularly when Lexi, Livewire saw play. Rangers have been out of the meta for a while now, but this card is still difficult to find, so this reprint should be a lot of help if anyone is still playing Rangers.

Felling of the Crown and Plow Under have been extremely expensive, to the point Earth heroes are nearly impossible to play. Rosettalink outside website also came out a year ago, so these cards have been even harder to find. We needed more copies of it in the market, so these reprints were once again a great decision.

Warmonger's Diplomacy and Snag, two generic cards, were becoming quite difficult to find because they came out a long time ago. Now, they're back. Warmonger's might be a legendary card, but it should still become cheaper, like Command and Conquer and Codex of Frailty did when they were reprinted.

Other Cards

Unlike other sets, Super Slam brought a new card for nearly all heroes in the game. Some are quite generous and will truly be quite helpful in their lists.

Let's go over a few of them. Blood Follows Blade lets Kassi create Allies, which we could only do with Raise an Army before. With this simple card, Kassi will perform a lot better against decks that can't deal with Allies, like Guardians and Rangers. Light Up the Leaves (1) will be a "third copy" of Burn Bare for Verdance. With it, this Battlemage, as well as all her Earth cards, will be able to deal a lot of Arcane damage.

Final Words - A New Direction for Guardians

Will Super Slam change the meta entirely?

Ever since the Guardian Mastery Packlink outside website came out, Guardians have changed. This is even more noticeable in Super Slam, which includes new Attacks that cost zero, Auras that work at "Instant" time, and game plans that go beyond "block with three cards and attack with Titan's Fist".

But all of this support is still not enough. The new cards don't really fit the Guardian game plan we use today, and none of the new heroes seem to align with the current meta trends. Lyath might have 5 Intellect, but we'll still need some time to figure out how to play him, and Pleiades might have a solid game plan, but only time will tell if that's enough for her to fit the current Cindra/Gravy Bones meta.

One Brute Comes Back from the Ashes

Tuffnut and Kayo, just like the new Guardians, also don't seem great for the current meta. Tuffnut will be great against Go Tall decks but seems to struggle with Go Wide decks because of his 3 Intellect. The new Kayo and his ability don't seem that strong either. Nonetheless, one Brute is standing out among the others.

Kayo, Armed and Dangerous disappeared for a long time. However, Super Slam gave him a bunch of new tools, like Strongest Survive (1) and Smashing Ground, which are both disruptive. Considering this is an aggressive deck, this could be quite dangerous. Meanwhile, Reckless Stampede's effect is quite strong against other aggressive decks.

With so many new, incredibly powerful tools, Kayo, Armed and Dangerous could become the new deck to beat, so be ready to face this Brute in the next tournaments!
